He first showed a gift for fashion when as a child he designed dresses for his three sisters. After leaving school at 16, he worked for a tailor on Savile Row and his many famous clients included Mikhail Gorbachev and Prince Charles. He left Savile Row and worked for some other companies and also spent time in Italy working for Romeo Gigli before returning to the UK, where he applied to be a pattern cutter tutor at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. After being persuaded instead to enroll as a student, he gained a Masters Degree in Fashion Design.

He has nevertheless been awarded the British Designer of the Year award four times. Although in 1996 he was made the chief designer at Givenchy succeeding John Galliano, he felt stifled there and described his first collection as "crap". He subsequently left Givenchy and he now works in partnership with the Gucci group, as creative director.

Alexander McQueen has boutiques across the globe, in London (4-5 Old Bond Street, W1S 4PD), New York, LA, Las Vegas and Milan. His designs can also be bought from Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges in the UK, and Saks 5th Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman and Barneys in the US.
