Alaia was born in 1940. When he was 17 he travelled to Paris to work in fashion. His first job with Christian Dior lasted but 5 days before he was dismissed - he subsequently obtained a job working in the house of Guy Laroche. To pay the bills, he also worked as a Azzedine Alaia bronze leather mules housekeeper for the Marquise de Mazan. He worked with the Marquise for three years before leaving to work for one of the Marquise's acquaintances, Comtesse Nicole de Belgiers. He spent the next five years with the Comtesse, cooking, looking after the children and designing dresses for the Comtesse and her friends. By 1965, he was doing so well designing and making dresses that he could afford his own accommodation. Shortly thereafter he opened his own showroom, which ultimately attracted the younger fashionistas of Paris.

His shoes often feature straps, embellishments and funkily designed heels - there is usually some unique touch to a pair of Azzedine Alaia designer shoes.

Azzedine Alaia's design company was bought out by Prada in 2000, but Azzedine Alaia continues his designs for the company. Celebrity fans of Azzedine Alaia shoes include both Naomi Campbell and Ashley Olsen, who were both seen recently sporting his gladiator sandals.

Don't you just love these Azzedine Alaia eyelet studded boots (on the left) which are 100% leather and have an amazingly sexy 5" heel? They had an RRP of over £1,000, but you can breathe a sigh of relief as they are now sold out (so you can't spend your money on them. Sorry!)
