Jimmy Choo is a brand of shoes that has received wide acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic. The business is currently managed by Tamara Mellon and recently opened a second Parisian boutique, in the exclusive Rue St Honore. The Jimmy Choo brand is synonymous with style and delights fashionistas the world over.
The story started when the young Jimmy Choo, a Malaysian shoe designer who was originally called Jimmy Chow, met Tamara Mellon, a beautiful British socialite and at that time the fashion editor of Vogue in the UK. Jimmy Choo was already a relatively successful shoe designer, but he worked out of a small studio in London's East End. Tamara knew that his designs had the potential for world domination, and they went into business together. Thus, the first Jimmy Choo boutique opened in London on Motcomb Street in 1996. Jimmy Choo's niece, Sandra Choi, was brought in as an additional designer, and brought additional success to the company.
Tamara Mellon's mother is a former Chanel model, whilst her father was a self-made business man. This combination gave Tamara the enviable combination of good looks and good business sense, together with an appreciation of the beauty, refinement and aesthetics necessary for the fine accessories market. Her mantra is "No matter what you wear, you are always well dressed if you have nice shoes."
Jimmy Choo shoes have always delighted celebrities and are often the shoe of choice at red carpet events. The "Sex in the City" series brought them wider appeal, as the brand became known to the man in the street and not just the rich and "well heeled".
Five years after the launch of the Jimmy Choo company, it was taken over by Lyon Capital. Tamara remained at the helm, although Jimmy Choo himself has now left the company and makes his own shoes under a special licence arrangement. In 2007, the company was purchased by TowerBrook Capital Partners. The company now seeks to add to the range of shoes with accessories including bags, fragrance and sunglasses.
The success of the Jimmy Choo brand is largely due to Tamara Mellon. As a glamorous, successful business woman, she epitomises everything that many women aspire to be.
However, you should be aware that the success of the Jimmy Choo brand means that the shoes now demand a premium price. Many of the other shoe designers featured on this site produce shoes that in my view are equal in style and quality to Jimmy Choo, but come with a cheaper price tag!

This new version of the Hunter Wellie is lined in a leopard skin print and the outside of the boots is in a mock croc design, and features Jimmy Choo hardware including gold coloured buckles and studs. These wellies are for true fashionistas with loadsamoney, as they retail for over £200. Expect to see Kate Moss wearing a pair very soon.
