The Kurt Geiger company is name after the Austrian entrepreneur, Kurt Geiger, who opened his first shoe boutique on Bond Street, London, in 1963. In 1985 the company was bought by the House of Fraser Group, but bought by Harrods in 1996.
Harrods maintained ownership of Kurt Geiger until 2005, when the chief executive of Kurt Geiger lead a management buy out, funded by Barclays Private Equity. Currently, Barclays own 72%, Harrods retain 3% and the management own the remaining 25%.
Kurt Geiger sells many different brands in addition to its own Kurt Geiger, Carvela, Solea and KG brands. Other brands distributed include Gucci, Prada and Liberty. In addition to the selling of shoes through department stores (Harrods, House of Fraser and Selfridges), Kurt Geiger has a number of stand alone boutiques, both in the UK and across the world. Unlike many other designer shoe manufacturers, their shoe boutiques are distributed across the UK - for example, they have branches in Leeds, Newcastle, Chester, Edinburgh and Bristol (to name but a few!).
